About local services

Knowing how local services work can positively influence how people settle into a new environment. Taking students out and about to show them how some local services work can be a useful way to help them gain confidence and improve their language skills.

How the bus service works

Contact the Bus Exchange for a tour. This service, offered once to new tutors, is designed to equip you to be able to show students around yourself on subsequent tours.

How the library works

Take your students on a library tour. Christchurch City Libraries has a range of services that support ESOL students and new migrants.
The new settlers’ page in the library website has been translated into ten languages
Library staff can introduce students to:

  • joining the library
  • free computer courses
  • the new settlers’ web page
  • free use of internet sites e.g. overseas newspapers
  • Fundview
  • mother tongue collections
  • resources for learning English.

How our rubbish collection works

You can organise a guided tour of a local waste management site so your students can see first hand how rubbish is managed in Christchurch.
