About local government

These activities and tours have been designed to help you teach your students how local government works.

Classroom activities

Before taking students out into the field to explore further, use some of our forms or marketing material as prompts for classroom discussions.

Resources such as a rate demand form, kerbside recycling poster, events promotional flyers or copies of Our Christchurch and ECan’s, Living Here publications can make a useful starting point.

Field trips

Visit a live Council meeting in the Council Chamber, or a local community board meeting. Students can sit in on either of these meetings as members of the public. Contact our Customer Call Centre on (03) 941 8999 or view our meeting dates.
