Discharging swimming and spa pool water

Certain conditions must be met when discharging water from a swimming pool or spa pool to storm water, a river, water course or ground as discharged water may contain traces of chlorine or other chemicals at levels which could be harmful to fish if discharged directly into the storm water.

Permission is not required to discharge domestic swimming pool or spa pool water into the sewer in the Christchurch City Council area.

If you suspect someone of emptying their swimming or spa pool into the storm water system that does not meet with the conditions please contact Environment Canterbury (ECan).
