There are many ways to care for the environment and yourself while having fun. Leaving the car at home, enjoying local attractions and lending a hand on planting days are great ways to meet people, keep active and enjoy Christchurch.

  • Active Canterbury helps you find local events, parks and tracks, dog exercise areas and clubs to promote health and wellbeing in Canterbury.
  • Walk for fun and fitness. Christchurch has over 49 scenic short walks and over 70 walking groups helping you to explore and enjoy your surroundings.
  • Go by bike. Move around the city with ease on the 53km of on-road cycle lanes and enjoy the 73km of off-road cycle paths in and around the city. 
  • Go by bus. Enjoy the journey and the destination. Buses can take you to most recreational areas in the city.
  • Enjoy the Garden City. Christchurch City is recognised as New Zealand's Garden City with over 740 parks and an extensive system of rivers, streams and wetlands. Find out more about these natural areas and find which are close to where you live.
  • You can help to care for a park or natural place by adopting a park, sponsoring, volunteering or helping out on planting days.
  • KiwiAble Leisure Card provides discounts to people with disabilities.
  • Leisure Centres are located around the city and host a wide range of activities from Tai Chi to swimming lessons, find out what's on at your local leisure centre.
  • Be There provides a directory of local events, expos, markets, art and cultural activities.
  • Organic explorer provides a directory of eco-recreation opportunities throughout New Zealand.
  • Be sunsmart when outside, slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat and wrap on sunglasses.
