Is there a waiting list for a Council flat?
Yes, there is a waiting list in place for all city housing units. The length of time depends on your individual circumstances. The wait list is prioritised based on housing needs assessed on the basis of supporting documentation and an interview.
Who is responsible for the gardens?
Any garden attached immediately outside of your flat is your garden and is your responsibility to keep tidy. Gardens/trees/areas in general spaces around the complexes are the Council's responsibility. If you become frail or unable to maintain your garden contact a housing officer to discuss your options.
Are animals allowed in Council units?
You are allowed to keep one neutered/spayed cat, or one caged bird. You must specify at the time of application if you have a small dog you want to keep in a social housing complex. All other tenants in the complex must be surveyed and all parties must agree to you having a dog in the complex.

Anyone visiting you with a dog must ensure it is on a leash, or tied up just outside your unit, at all times during their visit.
Do the units have garages?
A limited number of complexes have garages or carports available for rent. Please ask about availability at your interview. Most complexes have off-street parking, but in most cases parking spaces are not allocated to specific tenants. Car parks are for tenants’ cars only.
When will the lawns be mown?
The lawns are cut on a planned maintenance cycle. Weather and seasonal conditions affect when the lawns can be mown.

Can I change units?
In some circumstances you can transfer from your current accommodation to a different unit and/or complex. Your request will only be considered if you have a legitimate need to transfer for health, disability, support reasons or you experience a major change in your circumstances. To ask about changing units or to request a transfer, please talk to your housing officer.
Who do I call for emergency repairs?
All faults and repairs are to be carried out by City Housing's facilities maintenance management contractor.
Maintenance calls must be made to (03) 941 8666 . This number is available 24 hours for emergencies.
Who is responsible for removal of insects, pests or rodents from Council units?
It is the tenant's responsibility to rid their unit of insects and rodent infestations. For Huntsman spiders please catch the spider in a large see-through plastic container with a lid and call Biosecurity 0800 809 966 .
