Who can rent a social housing unit?

Social housing is available to people in Christchurch who have low incomes, limited assets and a genuine housing need.

Maurice Carter – A 39 unit complex.

If you think you are eligible for accommodation from City Housing, you must apply and be accepted for housing. Your eligibility [PDF 117KB] will be assessed against your residency status, income and certain assets you may own.

Please note, as we only have limited numbers of larger properties if you have more than one child we would encourage you to apply for accommodation with Housing New Zealand.

Once accepted for housing, you will go on a prioritised waiting list until a suitable unit becomes available.

How long you will spend on the waiting list depends on your individual needs and the type of housing you require. City Housing staff make the final decisions.
