Strategies and plans

Christchurch's municipal waste stream

This analysis was carried out between 2003 and 2004 and involved conducting two surveys. The first looked at the composition of waste in black rubbish bags and wheelie bins using hand sorting and weighing components. The second was an assessor estimating by weight the contents of refuse deposited by vehicles at the three transfer stations and the landfill sites. This reports outlines overall annual weight and composition of refuse over that 12 month period.

New kerbside collection service introduced in 2009

To reduce what goes to landfill, in 2006 the Council agreed to implement a new kerbside collection service that will involve the use of separate wheelie bins for the collection of recyclables and organics.

At its meeting on 4 March 2008 city councillors agreed that a separate wheelie bin was the best solution for the collection of household rubbish.

Councillors also selected the preferred tenderers for the kerbside collection service and the recyclable and organic processing facilities.

The three bin domestic kerbside waste collection service was introduced from early 2009.

Waste Management Plan 2006

After considering 3000 submissions on the Draft Waste Plan and based on the recommendations from the Zero Waste Working Party, on 9 November 2006 the Council finalised its Waste Management Plan 2006.

This plan contained a vision, goals and targets for the minimisation of solid and hazardous waste in Christchurch. It also contained over 100 actions that aim to advance on each target.

A stutory review of the 2006 plan is scheduled for 2010/2011.
