Christchurch has the highest dog ownership per capita in New Zealand, but not all of them are registered. The Animal Control Shelter is often over-stretched with housing impounded dogs.
The animal shelter is not a fun place for dogs – it is noisy and often stressful for a dog.
To prevent your family pet from being impounded in the shelter, it is essential to ensure the following:

There are pound and seizure fees [PDF 175KB] for the impoundment of a dog in the shelter. These can be made directly to the shelter upon collection of your dog.
