Animal shelter

The Council’s animal shelter ensures lost and found animals receive sufficient care and welfare during their stay.

Christchurch has the highest dog ownership per capita in New Zealand, but not all of them are registered. The Animal Control Shelter is often over-stretched with housing impounded dogs.

The animal shelter is not a fun place for dogs – it is noisy and often stressful for a dog.

To prevent your family pet from being impounded in the shelter, it is essential to ensure the following:

  • Your dog is registered and micro-chipped, to assist in the dog’s return home.
  • Your dog is securely contained at home and not left to wander the streets.
  • Your dog is under your control when exercising.
  • You report your dog immediately to Animal Control if it is lost.

Animal shelter fees
There are pound and seizure fees [PDF 175KB] for the impoundment of a dog in the shelter. These can be made directly to the shelter upon collection of your dog.
