The Council is responsible for dogs, livestock and poultry. However, and in common with all New Zealand local authorities, the majority of our day-to-day work concerns dogs. We are not responsible for other domestic pets such as cats, birds or fish.
We deal with all regulatory information about owning a dog and set policy to protect the safety and wellbeing of dogs, their owners and the public.
We keep a profile about every registered dog in Christchurch for contact information and a record of previous incidents and actions taken to assist us in providing a comprehensive and safe service to dog owners.
Here you will find information about your responsibilities as a dog owner, from registrations and micro-chipping, to areas for exercising and caring for your dog.
You can also report an animal to Council as lost or found and find out where the animals are taken to when picked up by Animal Control.
If you have a problem with a dog, you can report it to Council and we will assist you by taking the issue to the owner on your behalf.
We have a whole range of services so if you can not find the information you are looking for, please contact us.
