Streets and roads - frequently asked questions

What should I do if I see a damaged or missing traffic, bus or park sign?

If you see a damaged or missing sign the Council will arrange to have it repaired or replaced. Please contact the council on phone (03) 941 8666 or 0800 800 169 for Banks Peninsula residents, to arrange inspections. You can also report it online.

Response times to repair/replace signs vary:

  • Give Way/Stop signs - 2 hours for repair or 2 days for replacement.
  • Parking signs - 1 week (standard), 48 hours (urgent), 2 hours (dangerous).
  • General traffic signs (traffic warning signs (e.g. Keep Left), chevron signs and yellow AA signs - 24 hours for repair, 1 week for replacement.
  • Bus stop signs (excluding Orbiter signs) - 1 week.
  • Orbiter bus stop signs - 6 weeks.
  • Park/reserve signs - 6 weeks.
  • White plastic markers on roadside - 2 weeks.

If you find any signs that have been dumped, please contact the Council Action Line and we will arrange to have the sign collected.

Is there a gas supply in my street?

There are gas pipes in many streets around Christchurch, but only a few of them have gas supply. Please view the
map [PDF 3.06Mb] to see if your street has gas supplied by Rockgas.

How can I find out if a road is closed?

See the public notices for planned and unplanned road closures. For road closures which the Council are responsible for, phone (03) 941 8666 or 0800 800 169 for Banks Peninsula residents, or make a query online.

For road closures which the NZ Transport Agency is responsible for (e.g. state highways), please call Roadwatch 0900 33 222 or visit the AA's Roadwatch website.

See also project information for general road works that the Council is doing.
