Race Relations Day

Human Rights Commission Race Relations Day 2010 poster

Each year, 21 March is observed around the globe as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and marks the loss of life at Sharpeville in 1960 in South Africa.

Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres encourages a trend towards celebrating cultural diversity not just on Race Relations Day (21 March), but over a whole season of national and cultural activities from late January until the end of March. Christchurch City Council supports Race Relations Day for the contribution it makes to a key goal for the city: A diverse and inclusive community.

The Council traditionally supports a range of events during Summer Times between early December and late March. This incorporates a range of events to promote diversity and inclusion. Check BeThere for updates www.bethere.co.nz.
