Civil Defence

Disasters can and do strike at any time. Could you survive for more than three days without power, water or food?

To help ensure that you could, you need to know what to do before you have to do it. Make sure you and your family have a survival kit and an emergency household plan.

The Christchurch City Council is a member of the Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Group established under the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act 2002 (CDEM Act). The Civil Defence Emergency Management and Rural Fire Unit is a team of five full-time City Council employees.

At any time in our lives we could be faced with an emergency situation. The extent of what we might need to deal with and the consequences from the event might vary but our preparedness to handle the situation may be increased if we have better knowledge and understanding of the event.

Some hazards pose a greater risk to Christchurch and Banks Peninsula than others such as:

  • earthquake
  • rock fall on the Port Hills
  • sea level rises/climate change
  • erosion of the coastline and rivers
  • erosion of the Port Hills
  • flooding from the rivers
  • tsunami
  • fire in rural areas
  • extreme meteorological events (wind, snow, rain, drought).
