Water supply
All Christchurch people should have water back on. If you are without a water supply, please log your details on our No Water Notification form.
Drinking water quality
The City-wide boil water notice was lifted on 20 June 2011. More info
The Canterbury District Health Board drinking water testing programme does not include private wells and bores. Well and bore owners must organise ongoing private testing.
In some areas, the water supply is still chlorinated. The intention is to remove chlorination at the end of 2011. To reduce the smell and taste of chlorine in drinking water, boil chlorinated water, or store it an open container in the refrigerator.
Conserving water
Some of the wells that supply our drinking water have been damaged, and the wastewater system has been severely damaged (see diagram [PDF, 150KB]).
All Christchurch residents are asked to reduce water use to:
protect our drinking water supply
reduce the pressure on the damaged wastewater system
reduce overflow into waterways
To reduce water consumption:
Use a bucket to wash your car
Flush the toilet sparingly
Have quick showers, not baths
Only use the washing machine for full loads
Don’t leave taps running
Don’t use your kitchen waste disposal unit
