Mayor’s Welfare Earthquake Relief Fund

The Mayor's Welfare Earthquake Relief Fund will temporarily close for new applications from 4.00pm Friday 23 March. Any new applications received after this time will not be accepted for processing.

Purpose

•   The Mayor’s Welfare Earthquake Relief fund provides assistance to Christchurch residents, experiencing financial difficulties from the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. The fund was formed from donations.

The Fund

•   The Mayor’s Welfare Fund Charitable Trust is tasked with the distribution of the grants from the Mayor’s Welfare Earthquake Relief fund.

•   The Trust currently chaired by Councillor Helen Broughton has representatives from Christchurch City Mission, Christchurch Methodist Mission, Catholic Social Services, Salvation Army, PEETO, Pacific Island Evaluation, Age Concern Canterbury, Prisoners Aid, Work and Income and Presbyterian Support Services.

•   The Trust aims to work with sensitivity and flexibility to provide assistance to individuals or families experiencing financial difficulties due to the earthquakes.

•   This is not a cash payout fund. Payment, where approved, is made directly to vendors and suppliers on production of valid quotes.

•   A subcommittee of the Trust assesses applications for funding. The criteria are set out below, but the trustees may vary the criteria and exercise their discretion in exceptional circumstances. Download an application form.

Who is eligible to apply?

•   Applications can come from individuals and families who are residents of Christchurch city

Criteria

•   All applications must be earthquake-related
•   The applicant must be living in Christchurch
•   Applicants can receive assistance once from the fund
•   Retrospective funding can not be provided 
•   The fund will not grant funding that is the responsibility of another agency

Making an Application

•   Applications to be made on the official application form
•   Applications to be completed in full and signed by the applicant
•   Current contact information required
•   A verifiable current address and (If applicable) earthquake address required
•   All requested information in support of application to be provided - e.g. quotes, invoices, personal identification etc
•   Applicants must be available to attend an interview if required
