Note: Some totals may differ between tables due to rounding.

The City's population has fallen since the previous census in 2006. This followed a period of steady growth between previous census years. The decline can be attributed to the series of earthquakes which occurred in 2010 and 2011.

Area Unit

Usually Resident Population Area Unit Maps

The numeric change in population map shows the net increase or decrease of people in each area unit in the Greater Christchurch Urban Development Strategy area and the Banks Peninsula area of the City. The percentage change map shows the relative change in population within each area unit between 2006 and 2013.  It should be noted that some changes will be exaggerated where a small change in an area unit with a small population will result in a greater percentage change than if an area unit had a larger population.

The population density and change of population density maps in this file show the concentration and change in concentration of people across the Greater Christchurch UDS area and the Banks Peninsula area of Christchurch City.
