Facility Updates

  • The Southern Centre multi sensory experience will soon be opening at Pioneer Recreation & Sport Centre. Construction is well underway of the new room and is on schedule to open sometime in March.
  • With construction of the Pioneer Learn to Swim pool there will be temporary changes to the viewing gallery & outside area of Plunge cafe. Please see this notice for further details.
  • Cowles Stadium & Lyttelton Recreation Centre remain closed until further notice

Le Race Spin class with Michael Vink

Don't miss the chance for local cycling champion Michael Vink to inspire you as he powers the pedals in a special Spin class in the build-up to Le Race.

  • Wednesday 15th February, 6.30pm - 7.30pm 
  • Pioneer Recreation & Sport Centre
  • Cost is $10

Michael Vink is a four times New Zealand U23 National Champion and the current New Zealand U23 Road Race and Time Trial Champion.

Numbers are stictly limited so get in quick! Register for this class now at Pioneer Recreation & Sport Centre front counter.

Pool Availability

As we now have 60% less water space than prior to the earthquake, there are now allocated times for pool-based activities to ensure fairness to all of our user groups. This means there will now be times when lane swimming will be unavailable in some of our pools, or reduced lane availability.

Pioneer Recreation & Sport Centre lane swimming

Lane swimming will be available during all our opening hours except for:

  • Monday to Friday 3pm - 5.30pm (during Term time)  

Jellie Park lane swimming

Lane swimming be available during the following times:

Sports pool

  • Monday to Friday 8am - 4pm
  • Saturday 9am - 3pm
  • Sunday 7am - 9pm  

Recreation pool

  • Monday to Friday 5.30am - 9.30pm
  • Saturday 8.30am - 8pm (number of lanes available between 1-3)

Jellie Park aquajogging

Aquajogging will be available during the following times:

Sports pool

  • Monday to Friday 8am - 4pm
  • Saturday 9am - 3pm
  • Sunday 7am - 8pm

Graham Condon Recreation & Sport Centre lane swimming & aquajogging

We endeavour to have at least 3 lanes available for public use at all times in our 25 metre 8-lane ramped pool.

Generally more than 3 lanes (the best times to swim) are available:

  • Monday to Friday before 9.30am, between 2.30pm - 6pm, and after 7.30pm
  • Saturday afternoons
  • All day Sunday and Public Holidays

For aquajoggers please note the lane pool has a depth of 1.8m (northern end) graduating to 1.2m (southern end) making aquajogging most suitable at the northern end of this pool.

Tumbletimes

Tumbletimes is a casual drop in class for pre-schoolers running during term time. Classes cost $3.50 per session (and $2.50 for each additional sibling from the same family). 

Tumbletimes at North New Brighton War Memorial & Community Centre

The Tumbletimes sessions that were running at Cowles Stadium have now been relocated to the North New Brighton War Memorial & Community Centre located on Marine Parade

  • Starting from 8th February, every Wednesday at 9.30am during Term 1 2012

Tumbletimes at Pioneer Recreation & Sport Centre

Classes running Monday to Friday at 10.30am each weekday morning and also at 9.15am Monday & Thursdays only. 

Classes have started again for Term 1 2012. Last class for Term 1 will be Thursday 5th April 2012.

Classes will not be running at Pioneer on the following dates:

  • Thursday 16th February
  • Friday 17th February
  • Monday 20th February
  • Friday 2nd March
  • Friday 9th March

Pools iN SchoolZ

Sport Canterbury, with funding assistance from the Christchurch Earthquake Recovery Trust, the Mainland Foundation, Rotary International and Water Safety New Zealand, has arranged the purchase of a portable pool.

The pool is operated by the Christchurch City Council, who will provide swim education for Christchurch students who lost the use of their local pools after the recent earthquakes.

Eligible schools will be invited to apply for Kiwisport funding which will provide free transport to and from the portable pool for Year 3–6 students.

The first portable pool will be available for use in Term 4 2011 and is based at 232 Queenspark Drive, next to Queenspark School. Outside school hours, the pool can be booked for community use. Please contact Sport Canterbury on 373 5060 or .

For Term 1 2012 Christchurch City Council will be offering their Swimsmart afterschool programme at the Portable Pool. This will run from Monday 30th January to Thursday 5th April 2012. Bookings are now open. Children who are booked in for Swimsmart at the portable pool in Queenspark will receive a special gift – a child’s concession pass, good for five free swims at Pioneer, Jellie Park or Graham Condon Recreation and Sport Centres. The passes are valid for to use during Term 1 2012 only.

Bottle Lake Orienteering Day 19th February

When: Sunday 19th February 2012, 10am - 2pm

Where: Spencer Park, Heyders Road. NEW event start & finish area is Spencer Park, Heyders Road (previously Forest Information Centre, Waitikiri Road)

This even is for individuals, friends, children and families (ie all ages and abilities welcome, children aged 14 years & under must be accompanied by an adult). This event is to allow everyone to have a go at Orienteering. The course is open to walkers, runners, prams and mountain bikers.

The course has been mapped out by the Plains and Peninsula Orienteering Club who will guide and support participants through the courses. You don't require a compass but are welcome to bring one if you have one.

There will be separate courses for mountain bikers. Courses will vary for different abilities from beginners through to experienced.

Registration is open on the day from 10am (no registrations after 12pm). There is no charge to participate and spot prizes will be given throughout the day. Free sunscreen, sausage sizzle, and children's activities including bouncy castle and face painting.

State La Grande Swim 19th February

State La Grande Swim

The State NZ Ocean Swim Series makes its return to Canterbury on Sunday 19 February 2012 with the State La Grande Swim in Akaroa, and Christchurch residents have been offered a special incentive to enter, and to train at Council facilities.

To recognize the difficult year the city has had, Christchurch, Waimakariri and Selwyn residents who enter the State La Grande Swim are being offered a 50 percent discount on the registration fee, and the chance to win a $1000 prize pack.

Swimmers can choose between the children's 200-metre State OceanKids, the 'Give It A Go' 300-metre swim, the 'Step It Up' 1000-metre swim or the more challenging 'I'm Going Long' 2.8-kilometre swim around Akaroa Harbour.
