Introduction
The Little River water supply does not meet the New Zealand Drinking Water Standards, and is insufficient to supply all those people within the small settlement zoning who would like to be connected.
The Council is planning an upgrade of the Little River treatment plant to meet the drinking water standards. The project also includes upgrading the existing water supply infrastructure (pipe network) for the Little River area including Cooptown.
Project objective
- To upgrade the existing water supply infrastructure to meet the New Zealand Drinking Water Standards, and to ensure security of supply to the community.
Little River's water supply
A key driver for the water supply upgrade is the public health risk assessment gradings associated with a public water supply of this size. The Health (Drinking Water) Amendment Act 2007 requires that these standards are met within nominated time frames, regardless of the health of those in affected communities.
In the Little River area the size of the population being served by the water supply requires compliance by 2015 (Small Water Supply). Little River’s reticulation infrastructure, i.e., the pipes in the ground, is less than 30 years old. While some pipework is in reasonable condition, other sections may need to be replaced or upgraded. Reticulation will be extended to cover the areas zoned as “Small Settlement’’ including the Little River area and Cooptown.
Preliminary design is underway for both the treatment plant and reticulation works, and additional water supply sources are being investigated, to ensure security of supply.
The treatment and distribution work is planned for completion by 2012, and the reticulation upgrade and extension by 2014. Detailed design is expected to start in September 2011.
Keeping you informed
Preliminary design for both treatment plant and water supply distribution is expected to be finished by the end of August 2011. When this is complete, the Council will be providing the community with more information about the proposed improvement work.
