Hereford Street Upgrade

Work has begun to transform the section of Hereford Street between Oxford Terrace and Colombo Street into a more pedestrian-friendly area.

Construction began in the street on August 2 2010 and is expected to take 12 weeks.

In the next few months, the Christchurch City Council will install new paving, street furniture, raised planters and cycle stands in this part of Hereford St.

It will also widen footpaths to provide the opportunity for outdoor dining and create a 'slow street' by narrowing the road and installing paved areas which will indicate where pedestrians should cross. Wider footpaths and better lighting will also aim to make the street safer at night.

The Council’s aim is to create a more pleasant space for businesses and visitors to the area. Redeveloping Hereford Street will also help re-establish it as a vibrant retail and leisure destination. This work is an important part of the Council’s vision to revitalise the central city.

The section of Hereford Street between Colombo and Manchester Streets will also be revamped, with work expected to begin in mid 2012.
