Weeping Elm.
Most commonly known as the Stanmore Elm, this Weeping Elm (Ulmus glabra ‘Horizontalis’) is found at 300 Stanmore Road (beside New World Supermarket). It was planted in 1865 by Joseph Hadfield who had travelled from Glossop in Derbyshire, England with his family on the 'Mersey' three years earlier.
After arriving in Christchurch Mr Hadfield purchased eight acres of land, built a large two-story homestead and established an extensive garden, which contained many fine shrubs and trees including the Elm. In 1998 Mr Hadfield's great grandsons, Errol, Anthony, Martin and Roger Hadfield erected a plaque to honour the contribution Mr Hadfield has made to the city. The Stanmore Elm is listed as a Heritage tree in the current City Plan.
