Port Hills restoration update

Tussock and sky on the Port Hills.

The Christchurch City Council’s Regional Parks Team hold regular volunteer days. Volunteering gives people an opportunity to become involved in their local parks, to meet like-minded people interested in the environment, to explore areas of the parks they have never been to before and to contribute to the long-term health of the streams, forest remnants, open spaces, rock outcrops and wildlife in their area.

People play an important role in the preservation of our parks on the Port Hills throughout the year.

Winter is planting time. Gullies are planted to protect waterways and connect forest remnants. Spring and autumn bring grass growth and competition to the young planted trees that require care and maintenance.

Spring, autumn and summer also result in rapid growth of weeds and an opportunity to target key weed threats while in flower.

Regular working bees are held throughout the year for volunteers to actively engage in planting, controlling weeds and helping preserve and restore this unique environment.

If you are keen on volunteering see also get involved in your parks to  view volunteer opportunities around the city

Alternatively email the or contact the Customer Call Centre on (09) 941 8999 to register your name on the volunteer database for upcoming events.
