Volunteer in your parks

Here’s how you can volunteer in parks, open spaces and riverside reserves around Christchurch.

Volunteering is a great way to help look after the environment you enjoy, learn more about the place you live in and your community, be active in the outdoors and meet new people.

You don’t have to be super-skilled or super-fit – just keen and ready to give things a try. We look forward to seeing you, your families, friends and neighbours….

Ah, the places you’ll go, the things you’ll do!
The Council’s Greenspace team supports volunteer opportunities in many urban parks, regional parks, riversides, wetlands and coastal areas throughout the region. The kinds of activities you can be involved with include: coast care, rubbish clean ups, weed-busting, tree planting, riverside care, track making (for walking and biking), reporting pollution or issues.

Things you need to know:

  • Council staff provide leadership, materials, and look out for your safety while you volunteer in parks, and will do our best to support you in your work.

Come along to a Council volunteer day

Council staff organise regular public volunteer days in a number of parks throughout the region. The Council also celebrates the importance of trees with Arbor Day events each year.

To find a volunteer event near you, check out our volunteer events and programmes.

Join with others in your community

Join one of the more than 100 community groups in Christchurch carrying out activities and education for sustainability and the local environment. Or if you and your group have your own idea for a new community project to help our local environment, Council may be able to provide some support for your project.

For more information see community action for sustainability.

Volunteer your colleagues!

Corporate volunteering is a great way to give back to the community and to the environment, while fostering team relations outside the office in the fresh air. It's also a way for your business to meet its corporate sustainability values, and of course - the public loves a business that gives back.

Regular volunteering in parks

If you're keen to volunteer regularly with us, then we're keen to hear from you. Just tell us what you're interested in, and any preferences for location or activity type. Please understand that while we'll do our best to find a match, the opportunities on offer depend on staff capacity and management priorities.

Read the Volunteer Guidelines, then fill in the volunteer enquiry form and we'll contact you with some options. Thanks for your interest!
