The Christchurch City Council was the first local authority in New Zealand to set up a Road Safety Coordinating Committee in 1989 and the first to employ a Road Safety Coordinator. The committee meets monthly and works to improve road safety through coordination, cooperation, support and distribution of information among its 20 member road safety organisations in Christchurch.
In 1991 the then Land Transport Safety Authority set up coordinating committees in local authorities around the country and funded road safety coordinators based on the Christchurch model.
Committee work includes
Road safety action plans
Road safety action plans are developed through the committee every six months to plan and co-ordinate the activities of the member organisations. These action plans set out road safety activities month by month and are informed by crash data from the Police and NZ Transport Agency.
Road Safety Strategy
The Christchurch Road Safety Strategy developed through the Committee and adopted by the Council, sets goals, targets and priority areas. An implementation plan contained in the strategy provides a foundation for road safety activity in Christchurch.
Safer Christchurch
The Committee is one of the three reference groups for the Safer Christchurch Interagency Group. The work of the committee was recognised in the Safe Community Accreditation process for the council.
