Children learn to ride their cycle with confidence and be road-wise with the Cycle Safe Programme. The Programme targets year six students but can be tailored to meet individual school needs.
Students complete grade one (beginner) training sessions which include cycle maintenance, how to fit a helmet and basic cycling skills. If the students achieve the required standard they progress to grade two (intermediate) and begin road rule and on-road training in small supervised groups. At the end of the Programme all students receive a personal certificate detailing their achievements.
The Programe is aligned with NZ Transport Agency's national cyclist skills training guidelines.
Christchurch's Cycle Safe Programme is considered one of the best in the country and is used as a leading delivery model.
Christchurch is a great place to cycle, here are some great places to practise riding skills off the road:
- Hagley Park
- Bottle Lake Forest Park
- McLeans Forest
- Westburn Park - a simulated road setting with stop and give-way intersections, a round-about and even a one lane bridge.
Cycling is fun - ride with your friends on the way to school.
