AtoB by bike

Christchurch is mostly flat, which means cyclists don't have to work too hard to reach their destination. With a bit of motivation and two wheels underneath you – anyone can give it a go.

See below some helpful tips and info to get you moving.

Getting started

Check out the following links to the lay of the land bikes, find a bike type to suit your needs and brush up on the road rules for cyclists.

Cycle facilities

The City has 330 kilometres of on and off road cycle-ways. The 2011 Christchurch City Cycle Guide identifies these routes and also tells you how to use on-road facilities such as advanced stop boxes, traffic sensors and bus lanes.

Parking your bike

  • Try to park in a visible location and always lock your bike
  • If you can, hook the bike lock through both of your wheels and the stand
  • Remove or secure your bike lights

There are bike stands dotted around main shopping areas and 50 new bike stands have recently been installed in the central city. There is also free, covered bike parking in the central city.

Daunted about cycling both to and from work? You can now bus to work and cycle home with 20 routes that have buses with bike racks.

Cycleway updates

Due to earthquake and construction sites, some of our cycle paths have closures or detours along them. We apologise for any inconvenience.

  • The new and extended Annex Road subway is open.

  • Medway footbridge across the Avon River is closed. Alternatives are Swans and Gayhurst Road bridges.

  • The Porritt Park Foot bridge is closed. Instead take Avonside Drive and go around the outside of Porritt Park rather than through it.

  • The Avon Park foot bridge is closed. Alternatives are Gayhurst and Avondale Road bridges.

  • Antigua Street footbridge is closed. This is high on our list of bridge priority and we are endeavouring to open it as soon as possible. Alternative detours are through the hospital grounds, through Hagley Park or over the Montreal Street bridge.

  • Curletts Road cycle lanes are closed. The alternative route is Hanson's Lane, signposted from Curletts Road.

  • A shared path has been installed on St Asaph Street between Durham Street South and Madras Street. This shared path extends south on Madras Street to give access to CPIT campus. This is a good two way east/west link across the southern section of the city.

  • Peterborough Street and Salisbury Street are now outside of the cordon area. These streets offer good east/west links across the northern section of the city, especially Peterborough Street as it is mainly on the cordon boundary and therefore there are less conflict points through intersections.

  • A section of cycle lane along Main North Road between Cranford Street and Meadow Street has been temporarily removed. The alternative route is along the footpath and is sign posted.

  • A section of cycle lane along Straven Road between Fendalton Road and Weka Street has been temporarily removed. The alternative route is along the footpath and is sign posted.
