Island Summers - needlework, art, photography, music, dance
Date: Tuesday 12 January – Wednesday 10 February 2010
Closed Waitangi Day Saturday 6 February 2010
Admission: Free
Island Summers marks an historical milestone for the Pacific Arts, providing a snapshot of the last ten years of the Pacific Arts Festival in Christchurch.
It is accompanied by two exhibitions that remind us Pacific arts, traditional and contemporary, are alive and kicking in Christchurch and beyond.
Tiare Maori exhibits the traditional Cook Island art of tivaevae and the relatively new but related art of cotton flower making.
What-cha Say? is an exhibition of talented young Pacific and Maori artists whose work sheds some insight on what’s meaningful for young people today.
Together these exhibitions celebrate festivals gone and yet to come and remind us that – yes it’s summer and that Otautahi is on an island in the Pacific.

Uncover the stories behind New Zealand’s relationship with Asia through the lens of young Kiwis. In this exhibition Asia:NZ Foundation Young Leaders present their experiences through photographs and short stories – focusing their lens on the strong connection between New Zealand and Asia.
They take us on a journey of discovery - exploring the diverse delights of Asia, and how experience overseas has become a point of influence for the rest of their lives. They ask us to consider their inner journey – who they are when they come home and their sense of shifted identity.
“From the modern metropolis of Shanghai to the vast and sprawling hinterlands of Inner Mongolia; from the bustling markets of New Delhi to the spectacular night-life in Tokyo, and then to our return home - let us take you on an eye-opening adventure.”
