Finding New Zealand – how maps show the exploration and development of New Zealand
Date: Tuesday 24 November 2009 – Saturday 9 January 2010
Admission: Free
The maps in this exhibition attempt to show how exploration patterns can be reflected in the maps of the time. 18th century and early 19th century maps of the whole of New Zealand show how the early world explorers "filled in the gaps" and increased the accuracy after Cook's 1772 chart; 19th century maps of Canterbury show the development and settlement of the Plains including early runs. Curated by Paul ARNOLD - Antique Print Gallery, Christchurch and Neil McKINNON -Timaru Maps, Timaru.

A-Z of Canterbury Birds - a photographic ornithological odyssey
Date: Tuesday 24 November 2009 – Saturday 9 January 2010
Admission: Free
We hear them, sometimes notice them, and tend to take them for granted though even our common little backyard birds are fascinating when captured in detail through discerning lenses.
From Albatrosses to Zosterops lateralis (Silvereye), Canterbury's birds offer variety of size, plumage, colour and song. Some have arrived as permanent residents including the raucous Magpie and the aloof Harrier, and some, such as Godwits, are summer visitors. Many of our seabirds are quite stunning while swamp birds exemplify cute to comical.
Photographers can't capture their songs but a group of Christchurch photographers are happy to have captured the characters of a wide selection of Canterbury's ornithological citizens.
