Christchurch heritage

Following the Canterbury Earthquakes the Christchurch City Council Heritage Team is available to offer free advice to owners of heritage and character buildings. This includes:

  • Guidance for making safe and repairing both commercial and residential buildings
  • Assistance with scopes of work for insurance claims
  • Advice around any resource consent issues which may arise, including discussions and site visits before any applications are made
  • Further details about Council Heritage Incentive grant funding available for conservation works on listed buildings
  • Advice and help in making applications to the Canterbury Earthquake Heritage Building Fund Trust

The aim of the team in the first instance is to help owners understand all options available to them in order to make informed decisions. We particularly focus on owners who wish to retain and repair their heritage and character buildings, but advice is also available to owners if demolition is the only option for their building.
