Christchurch heritage

Our city has a rich and diverse heritage drawn from Maori, European and other sources. This heritage helps to create the unique sense of identity we associate with 'Christchurch'.

As Christchurch develops, we need to balance the needs of the present and future with the legacy of the past  -  that is the focus of the Christchurch City Council Heritage Team.

Heritage Week
Heritage Week is an annual October event that celebrates our unique social, cultural, built and environmental heritage. Each year the event has a different focus, though the main aim of Heritage Week stays the same - to raise awareness of our special heritage places, and the importance and benefits of conserving them. The focus in 2009 was 'Doves and Defences: Discover Christchurch in Peace and Conflict'
