Due to the large aftershock on 22 February, the Christchurch City Council Archives are closed until further notice. Whilst there was no damage to the facility where the archives are stored, or to the archives themselves, the area has been reallocated for Civil Defence purposes. Please watch this site for more updates and again, we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause our customers.
The Public Records Act 2005 ensures public access to local authority records and the Christchurch City Council therefore has a legislative requirement to preserve records that have been deemed as archival, to both aid accountability and promote the historical and cultural heritage of the city.
Records held in our collection include:
Minute books
Correspondence
Cemetery records
Please note that there may be limitations placed on some parts of the collection – either due to restricted content or extreme fragility of the items. The Archivist will advise accordingly.
The Christchurch City Council Archives are housed at Recall, 12 Braeburn Drive, Hornby. This is a temporary location whilst Recall build a new facility which will be completed at the end of 2011 and includes a specifically built archival vault.
The Archive reading rooms are open by appointment only on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, 9.30am-1pm. Please send any requests for information or queries to archives@ccc.govt.nz and we will respond as soon as possible, alternatively phone (03) 941 8999 .
