Found A Dog
If you find a dog you may either return it
to it's owner if you know where the dog comes from or who it belongs to, or you can call the Council to come
and collect the dog from you.The Council may ask if the dog is secured, ready for pick up. This does
not mean that you are expected to approach the dog and tie it up if you are unsure about doing this, and you would
be discouraged from trying to secure a dog that is showing aggression. It is however advantageous for the
Council if you can ensure that the dog will still be there when an officer arrives and a secured dog will be
treated as a priority job. This may just mean closing a gate so the dog doesn't wander off. This
action also assists by preventing the dog from causing any further problems arising from it's wandering.
Note: You cannot keep a dog that you find. You need to take one of the courses of action
detailed above and if the dog is impounded by the Council you can ask to be considered as a new owner for the dog,
should it's owner not claim it within the required seven days. After this time the Council can dispose
of the dog as it sees fit, and tries to re-home all suitable dogs to appropriate homes.
Wandering/stray Dogs
Stray and wandering dogs are a major cause of nuisance throughout the community. While at large these
dogs may cause problems such as ripping rubbish bags, fouling on private property, chasing cars and pedestrians,
and even aggressive attacks on people or on other domestic animals. For a dog and it's owners the
consequences of a serious incident may be dire, so owners are strongly urged to ensure their dog is kept under
control at all times. No dog is allowed on the street (or footpath) unless it is on a lead held by a
responsible person.
Payments at the Dog Shelter can be made by: cash, cheque, and EFTPOS. (Cheques should be made out to Christchurch City Council)
