Each day 150 million litres of wastewater is removed from Christchurch homes, shops, and business premises through 1,562km of sewer mains.
Christchurch wastewater is mainly domestic sewage (from kitchen, bathroom, laundry and toilets) and a smaller proportion of industrial and commercial discharges. If the pipes were laid end to end they would reach all the way to Cape Reinga in the North Island. We seldom give a thought to where all the wastewater goes, let alone how it actually gets there.
