Reduce waste at school

The Christchurch City Council has an Assisted Kerbside Recycling Programme which is a free recycling collection service for schools in the Christchurch area.

Schools can choose to dispose of domestic quantities of recycling through our weekly kerbside collection service or choose to have a wheelie bin collection service. This programme aims to:

  • Promote recycling at schools and encourage children to take responsibility of their waste
  • Help our environment by keeping valuable resources out of the landfill
  • Help schools reduce their waste disposal costs

What does the programme entitle my school to?

By joining the programme schools are entitled to:

  • A maximum of one recycling crate per classroom, tea room, canteen, library and school office
  • A wheelie bin for every five recycling crates (crates are to be emptied into the wheelie bins which are to be put out for collection reducing congestions on the footpath on collection day)
  • Weekly collection by the recycling collector
  • Resources for the classroom

What are the responsibilities of my school?

Schools are responsible for:

  • Ensuring only correct types of materials are put out for recycling and are presented in the appropriate way – see our Help Us Recycle Poster for more information
  • Educating and involving students in recycling in the classroom
  • Discussing with the recycling collector about the placement of any wheelie bins and the collection time
  • Contacting the Council and giving at least two weeks notice should your school no longer wish to participate in the programme
  • The safe keeping of the wheelie bins which remain the property of the Council and are to be returned to the Council should the school no longer be involved in the programme
  • All costs associated with the repair and/or replacement of equipment provided by the Council

How does my school apply to join the programme?

  • Nominate a contact person to be the School Recycling Contact i.e. principal, teacher or caretaker. This person will represent/act on behalf of the school and liaise with the Christchurch City Council and the recycling collector.
  • The School Recycling Contact to complete the application form (PDF, 40KB, free PDF reader)

Funding Support

Creative use of recycled material by Russley Primary School

Many schools are keen and willing to get involved in waste reduction programmes but don't always have the funds to buy the equipment required. The Community Trust will consider applications for this type of support from schools. Proposals can be made under the banner of Education, and the closing date for applications is 20 August 2005. For more information on what to do check out the Community Trust's web site.

Note: The Christchurch City Council would like to thank Christ the King School, Russley School and Chisnallwood Intermediate School for their contributions in updating the Assisted Kerbside Recycling Program.
