Burwood Landfill

The Christchurch City Council Burwood landfill site, in Bottle Lake Plantation (cnr. Rothesay, Burwood, and Prestons Roads) was closed in June 2005 with the opening of the Kate Valley Landfill. Since its opening in June 1984 Burwood Landfill has accepted refuse from the greater Christchurch area, and towards the end of its lifespan, refuse from neighbouring territorial authorities as well.

The landfill was planned to operate in 3 stages - Stage 1 began in June 1984, and was completed in 1988. Stage 2, starting in 1988, was to have an estimated life of 12-15 years. Stage 3, to the east of Stages 1 and 2, will not be used.

The completed areas of the landfill are being progressively be rehabilitated to ensure that the site achieves its proposed end-use of recreational area, as soon as is practicable.

A draft end-use and rehabilitation plan has been prepared by landscape architects, and a full time landscape contractor is working on site. Contractors will continue to work until the landfill is fully restored.
