Landfill sites
Burwood landfill is the current disposal site of rubbish for Christchurch and adjacent local councils til May 2005. The landfill is not opened to the general public for disposal of domestic rubbish. Domestic rubbish that is not picked up from the kerbside in the weekly pick-up can be taken to one of our three refuse stations. The Council arranges transport of compacted refuse from the refuse stations to the Burwood landfill for final disposal.
Consent has been granted for a new regional landfill site at Kate Valley, in the Hurunui District Council area. It is anticipated that Kate Valley landfill site will be operational in May 2005, at which time Burwood will close for good.
Christchurch also has 14 cleanfill sites operated by private owners. These sites are used mainly for disposal of construction and demolition wastes which are inert and will not cause adverse environmental and health effects.
The Christchurch City Council owns 47 closed landfill sites which are spread across the city. These sites have been rehabilitated and serve the community mainly as recreational facilities such as parks, reserves, and community facilities - like Pioneer Park recreation centre.
