Tell me about the Ferry Road Sewer Renewal Project?
Why is this work necessary? The existing sewer pipe is old and eroding in several places. As a result, there have been several blockages. It may collapse if it is not replaced.
Where is the work site? Between 290 Ferry Road and the turnoff into Grafton Street (basically between Osborne and Grafton Streets), on the southern side of Ferry Road.
When will the work start? The work is programmed to begin at 7pm on Monday 10 November 2008.
When will it be finished? It is expected to be finished in mid December 2008.
What are the hours of work? Most of the work will be done overnight Sundays to Thursdays, between 7pm and 6am (so work on Thursday nights will finish at 6am Friday). However, some daytime and weekend work may be necessary to meet project timeframes. More daytime work may also be done if the overnight work is found to be disturbing residential properties.
But the Start Work Notice says work will take place overnight, Mondays to Fridays? A change was made to the work programme following advice from the contractor that night-time work on main thoroughfares can be unsafe on Friday and Saturday nights. We apologise if this change has inconvenienced you.
What does the work entail? Excavating a trench along the roadside and installing a new section of pipe.
What effect will it have on motorists? There will be two lanes open during the day, but the speed limit alongside the works site will be reduced to 30kph. There will only be one lane open during work hours (mainly 7pm to 6am Sunday to Thursday) with temporary traffic lights at either end. Drivers should expect short delays.
Can cyclists still use this section of Ferry Road while the work is being done? Yes, because the speed limit will be reduced to 30kph, but care is recommended.
Can I still access the businesses along this section of Ferry Road? Yes, they will operate as normal, but there may be short delays while contractors facilitate access.
Will there be parking at the businesses along this section of Ferry Road while the work is being done? Yes, existing off-street parking lots will be accessible.
