Draft Metropolitan Sports Facilities Plan

On this page:

About the plan

The Draft Metropolitan Sports Facilities Plan is a city-wide plan to guide the Christchurch City Council's future role and investment in metropolitan sporting facilities during the next 20 years. These are facilities which provide benefits and services for sport at a city-wide, national and international level.

The Plan looks at all options for the city, including upgrading, redeveloping and expanding existing facilities to ensure Council maximises use of existing venues before investing in new facilities.

Sporting codes, community funding organisations and government agencies have long advocated for the establishment of a longer term planning process, such as the Draft Metropolitan Sports Facilities Plan, to enable Council and stakeholders to work together to fund, fund, construct and operate a suite of world-class facilities.

Priorities as identified in the Draft Plan will guide development during the next 20 years and inform Council decision-making for the 2009-2019 Long Term Council Community Plan. Adoption of the Plan does not guarantee a facility will be upgraded, redeveloped or built.
