Styx Mill Reserve Development Concept October 1993
Introduction
Styx Mill Reserve lies to the north of the city in close proximity to a large residential population. This reserve, which is 52.6 hectares in size, extends along the Styx River for nearly 1.6 km and provides a diversity of site conditions and opportunities.
Much of this diversity is due to the low lying nature of the reserve, which is lies up to 4 to 5 metres below much of the surrounding landscape. As a result of this basin effect and because Styx Mill Reserve is generally undeveloped, parts of the reserve have very high biological and ecological values.
Styx Mill Reserve is Council owned and the majority of the titles are held as 'recreation reserve' under the Reserves Act 1977. Those titles which are still held as fee simple will also be classified 'recreation reserve' under the Reserves Act 1977.
The reserve is designated Open Space P in the operative Waimairi District Scheme. It is proposed to rezone the reserve as Conservation 1 zone in the New Christchurch City Plan.
