New Brighton Pier
History
The original New Brighton Pier, built in 1894, stood on the same site as the present pier. When the original pier was threatened with demolition in 1963 a group of residents, formed the Pier and Foreshore Society to try to save it. However, it was unsuccessful and the pier was demolished in 1964.
On 1 November 1997 the new pier was officially opened, the culmination of more than 30 years work by the Pier and Foreshore Society. It raised almost $2 million from the community which was matched by a further $2 million from the Christchurch City Council.

View magnificent Pegasus Bay from the Pier. You can see the southern ocean waves, the Kaikoura mountain peaks, Christchurch City glinting over the plains and the hills of Banks Peninsula.
Play around. Be creative on the beach, swim in the waves (between the flags of course), enjoy watching your children in the play area or splashing in the paddling pool.
Fish all year round! There are a variety of species to catch. A unique opportunity to experience South Island offshore fishing, while still on firm ground. Species which can be caught include red cod, kahawai, dog fish and mullet. Cutting and washing boards provided. See the information panel on the Pier.
