Grasslands
The dry plains grasslands at McLeans Island are a large area of land south of the Waimakariri River and north-west of Christchurch International Airport. The grasslands are significant for their ecological and landscape values, representing prehuman grasslands, shrublands and woodlands of the Canterbury Plains. Although most of the grasslands are currently under development, it is likely in the future that significant areas will be made available as part of the network of the city’s parks and reserves.
Management issues
Over the years widespread grazing by sheep and rabbits has generally eliminated any rejuvenating seedlings of native vegetation. Some areas of land are being fenced off to enable regeneration of tree and shrub species. The management of the dry plains grasslands as an ecological and educational resource is a key issue for the future development and use of this unique area of land.
The integration of educational and recreational activities with the preservation of the grasslands is one of the aims being considered by the City Council and Environment Canterbury.
Most of the grasslands are currently not open to the public. There are long term plans however, to provide recreational areas for picnicking and walking.
