Bottle Lake Forest Park

Biking, horse riding and running tracks re-routed

22 May 2008

Map of tracks affected by closure [PDF 70KB]

A compartment of trees is currently being felled adjacent to the Landfill Road in Bottle Lake Forest Park. It runs from Bravo Rd right down to Hotel Rd and from the Landfill Rd to 22nd Ave.

This affects both the start of the coastal mountain bike track and the blue running track. The running and mountain bike tracks have been re-routed. Mountain bikers will share the first section of track with the Blue trackers until just after the Landfill Rd approximately 100-150 metres and then the rest of the track is unaffected. This compartment will take approximately three weeks to complete felling operations.

However... The second compartment that is going to be felled is the block adjacent (west) to the main pond area, it runs from Hotel Rd to Foxtrot Rd and from 20th Ave to 21st Ave. This will impact on Mountain Bike Track, Hales Track, and Running Tracks. All the tracks will be re-routed around the affected forestry block, however there will be some track sharing occurring. This compartment will take approximately 4-5 weeks to complete felling operations.

The third compartment to be felled is adjacent to Heyders Rd and behind houses in Styx River Place, this will have minimum impact on tracks as there are currently no tracks in this forestry block.

We will supply an alternative route for safety and to minimise disruptions to our park users.

Media release: Biking, horse riding and running tracks re-routed in Bottle Lake Forest Park - 22 May 2009

Bottle Lake Forest Park is situated approximately 10km north east of central Christchurch, adjacent to the coast. Bottle Lake Forest is a production forest and trees are felled and logged in a 30 year rotation by the Selwyn Plantation Board.

Recreational facilities include mountain-bike tracks, horse-trekking trails and walking tracks.

Developed from a farm in the early 1900s the forest expanded from coastal protection plantings to its present size. It is planted with mostly pinus radiata and covers over 800 hectares of coastal sand dunes. The combined area of these forests is four times the size of Hagley Park, and as such, forms an important asset to metropolitan Christchurch.
