Christchurch, the Garden City

Garden awards

Community Pride Garden Awards

First held in 1991, the Community Pride Garden Awards are a Council initiative to acknowledge the work of residential gardeners who, by their efforts, have contributed to Christchurch’s garden city image. They encourage local residents to beautify their streets and garden frontages.

All six of the city’s Community Boards take part in the garden awards with property selection made on their behalf in each Ward in January by the Christchurch Beautifying Association.

The owners of gardens selected are presented with a certificate which acknowledges the effort and contribution they have made.

The Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board also presents separate awards to commercial property owners and residents of elderly persons housing complexes.

Both the Canterbury Horticultural Society and the Christchurch Beautifying Association also run garden competitions.

The Council is also involved, jointly with the Canterbury Horticultural Society in a Native Gardens Award.
