Pre-purchased plots

Pre-purchased plots (purchase of a plot to hold for future use, not needed immediately for a funeral) can only take place in the following cemeteries.

• Memorial Park
• Ruru Lawn
• Sydenham
• Yaldhurst
• Avonhead, (lawn area only)

If you wish to pre-purchase contact the Cemeteries Administrator, who will arrange a time for someone to meet you at the nominated cemetery to view and select a plot.

Once full payment has been received, the Certificate of Purchase will be posted out to the purchaser. This should then be put in a safe place as proof of purchase of the plot.

If a family wish to pick a particular plot at the time of a burial the Funeral Director will arrange for the family to meet Council staff at the cemetery. Fees will be charged through the Funeral Director on behalf of the City Council.

A plot maintenance fee is paid once only at the time of purchase.

A full plot will hold two burials, with one being double depth and the other placed on top. There is also room to place up to four lots of ashes in this plot, but only one headstone is allowed. Two lots of ashes may be placed in a full size plot without impediment to subsequent casket burials. A side by side plot can hold four burials, or two if dug at single depth.
