Telecom and Vodafone have experienced difficulties in securing property for mobile phone sites in Christchurch and this has resulted in large areas not having adequate coverage.
In March 2000, Christchurch Mayor Garry Moore, offered to put a formal process in place to enable mobile phone sites to be located on Council property.
The rationale was to help address public concerns about the location of sites and provide telecommunications companies with flexibility in selecting appropriate locations.
The process was finalised in July this year and is unique to Christchurch. It is triggered after all other possible locations have been exhausted, or are deemed inappropriate because of the potential impact on a community. The process recognises that in some cases Council owned land may be a better option for a community than privately owned land.
