Public Commissions

  • Firefighter’s Tribute (2002), built by the Avon River as part of a Firefighter’s Reserve, and coinciding with the 7th World Firefighters Games. It was constructed from steel recovered from the wreckage of the World Trade Centre as a gift to New Zealand from New York City, as were four other “Cities of Peace” worldwide.
  • Reasons for Voyaging (2003), a large sculptural installation acting as a welcome at the entrance of the Christchurch Art Gallery, commemorating the new building.

Graham Bennett, Lines Extending Kurashiki (2003), Kurashiki, Japan

  • Lines Extending Kurashiki (2003), a gift from Christchurch City to Kurashiki in Japan, commemorating three decades as sister cities. The sculpture was completed by Bennett in Japan during a five week residency at Kurashiki University, and was constructed from stainless steel, and boulders from the Waimakariri and Rakaia Rivers in Canterbury, and Takahashi River in Japan.
