City Water and Waste
All Flushed Out
What happens every time we flush that toilet? Our sewage (almost all water) is carried through a network of underground pipes and pumps to the Wastewater Treatment Plant. At this facility your students will discover what happens to all that waste once it has disappeared from their bathroom, kitchen and laundry. Be prepared for a revival of your senses – this is a smelly one!
Casting Magic with Worms
Even worms are doing their thing for the environment! Visit the EcoDepot, Metro Place and discover how these wriggly creatures can help us to reduce our waste. Students can build their own worm farm to take home!
Water for Life
Water - abuse it and you'll lose it! A visit to Christchurch's Main Water Pumping Station will teach your students just how much of a precious resource our water is. They'll discover the secret to our high quality water supply and what can threaten that continued supply.
A Waste of a Day Out
On the Waste of a day Out programme, Students will gain an insight into all aspects of the waste hierarchy, highlighted by a visit to 5 key waste management sites within Christchurch. This is an action packed day that will provide your students with a wealth of information to explore on your return to the classroom. The programme offers a focus on waste minimisation and management and can be used as excellent ignition or formative learning if used in a unit of work. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover is the theme for the day.
Watch your Waste
This programme provides a focus on the environmentally healthy breakdown of materials, through the naturally enhanced compost process, and its environmentally unhealthy alternative, rubbish in the landfill. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover is the theme for the day.
They will also see just how much unnecessary rubbish is being dumped and understand the environmental implication involved.
