What is Environmental Education?
Environmental education is a cross-curricular approach to learning which helps students to understand the concept of "a sustainable environment". The ultimate aim of such understanding is to help young people develop a caring and committed attitude for the environment and towards each other which is demonstrated in their behaviour. Therefore, environment education is concerned not only with teaching conceptual knowledge and skills for monitoring and measuring environmental quality, but also with the development of the values, attitudes and skills which will motivate and empower students to contribute towards the sustainability of natural and social environments.
Learning through action provides environmental education experiences in a students' local environment following the Environmental Education Guidelines (Ministry of Education, 1999) and using experiential learning philosophies. Experiential learning is a challenging, active, student centred process that involves critical thinking skills and encourages students to take initiative and be responsible for their environment. The follow up of the learning activity with structured opportunities for reflection is vital to the experiential learning process. Learning Through Action supply pre and post teaching material to help facilitate this process in the classroom. |
