Little River Railtrail

Start: At Motukarara. Turn off the main Akaroa Highway at Motukarara – it is well sign posted.
Distance: 21 km from Motukarara to Little River.
Difficulty: Easy- Moderate (depending on your distance and weather conditions)

Ride Description:
A picturesque bike ride on an old rail embankment from Motukarara to Little River following the shores of Lake Ellesmere and Lake Forsyth, giving magnificent views across the lakes and out toward the Southern Alps. There are ample opportunities to view birdlife, including herons.

Shorter Ride options
There are other start options for shorter rides and you can arrange a car-swap with a group of people travelling in the opposite direction. The trail can be accessed at Kaituna Quarry, Seabridge Road, Birdlings Flat and Catons Bay.

  • Seabridge Road  to Jones Road: (9km one-way) this option maximises the birdlife viewing.
  • Birdlings Flat to Little River: (7km one-way) a shorter ride which can take you Little River, to rest at the cafes and explore the antique shops and galleries.
  • Lincoln to Prebbleton: This section of the rail trail is now open, a 7 km off road sealed route alongside Birches Road.

Hints and Tips

  • Check the weather forecast before heading out, as foul weather and a blasting head-wind can put a dampener on your ride. It is recommended to start early in the day before the wind picks up, and carry a warm jacket as the trail is exposed to the wind.
  • Take plenty of water and energy food as there are no refreshment stops until Little River.
  • Good picnic stops are at Kaituna Quarry and Catons Bay.
  • Public toilets are available at Motukarara Domain and Little River.
  • The track surface is compacted shingle suitable for off road bikes.
  • The trail is grazed by sheep. Please don’t disturb them.
  • The bike trail doesn’t quite go all the way to Little River – there is a small on-road section, please cross the road with care.
  • Bikes can be hired from the Little River Challenge Service Station if requied.
