Heathcote Towpath Ride
Start: Gould Crescent
Distance: A short ‘there and back ride’
Difficulty: Easy
Ride Description:
This ride explores the estuarine salt marshes of the lower Heathcote River, with superb views of the Port Hills. The ride follows the Heathcote River from Gould Crescent to Ferrymead Bridge. Ride downstream along the grassy banks to Tunnel Road where a concrete path leads you under the bridge – this can be taken mid to low tide (it can be muddy and slippery with river silt). The trail heads downstream with native plantings shielding Ferry Road – the sound of the cars soon disappears. There is a bird hide and information panels highlighting the historic and wildlife heritage. Back in it’s heyday the Heathcote River provided a transport lane ferrying freight from Lyttelton Harbour to the city. The track has interesting twists and turns and with a mix of gravel paths, foot bridges and grassy trails. At the end of the track there is a viewing platform opposite Ferrymead Heritage Park.
Hints and Tips:
- It is a novelty, especially for the kids to go underneath the Tunnel Road bridge.
- Take a bite to eat and enjoy the views across to Ferrymead.
