  Race Relations Day

Race Relations Day 18 March 2008!

Historically, Race Relations Day marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination observed around the globe on 21 March each year.

This year Race Relations Day was celebrated a few days earlier on Tuesday 18 March due to March 21 falling on Good Friday. However, at Council we are encouraging the national trend to celebrate cultural diversity over a longer season, from late January until the end of March.

Find out more about Race Relations Day by visiting the Human Rights Commission web site. Here you can discover events and activities happening in and around Christchurch and throughout the rest of the country.

This project is a contribution to the NZ Diversity Action Programme. Christchurch City Council is now also a partner in the NZ Diversity Action Programme.

Welcome to Christchurch

A new campaign for international students and all newcomers to this city.

Christchurch City Councillors, along with Joris de Bres, Race Relations Commissioner, and MP Pansy Wong, will participate in the Welcome to International Students at the University of Canterbury on Monday 17 March 2008.

DARRYN GEORGE: PULSE exhibition Opens 8 March - Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna O Waiwhetu

The walls themselves become the artwork in Darryn George’s new project. Stretching more than fifty metres and reaching from floor to ceiling, Pulse is an engulfing fusion of customary Mäori art and contemporary abstract painting. Using intricate patterns, chanting rhythms and an eye-popping palette of red, black and white, George fills the hushed white cube of the Sutton Gallery with a continual pulse of light, language and pattern.

Other Community events supported by Christchurch City Council:

Christchurch City Council will continue to work with the Human Rights Commission and Outward Bound Otautahi to support the Outward Bound Otautahi Southern Cross course, held for the first time last year. This year’s course will be held from 2 - 22 August.

This course is aimed at a culturally diverse range of Christchurch young people (18-26), who are not in secondary education and can take 21 days away from work, training or education.

The course costs are sponsored, providing an opportunity for those who may not normally have the ability to experience this great course.

Applications will close on Friday 18th April.

View the application form and a brochure.

Hint: If you are printing the brochure, print on the double sided setting.
