Native Garden Awards
The Christchurch City Council and the Canterbury Horticultural Society established the Native Gardens Award for gardens that represent and display New Zealand native plants and habitats in Christchurch.
The award is designed to promote and encourage the use, benefits and presentation of native plants in an urban setting. Its aim is to recognise gardens that demonstrate a notable contribution to Christchurch’s natural heritage and biodiversity. These gardens will also contribute to the wider landscape and the city’s international reputation for diverse gardens.
There is no competition involved in the annual awards, which are organised by the Canterbury Horticultural Society with support from Christchurch City Council.
Judges simply come to check that gardens have a substantial native element and are being well cared for. This might mean that all of the plants in the garden are natives or that there is a dedicated area for native plants. And thejudging team won't surprise you - they give at least a week's notice before they visit.
