- 24 hour emergency health care is available from the Bealey Ave Medical Centre corner of Bealey Avenue and Colombo St, phone 365 7777. There will be a charge.
- Christchurch Hospital - Accident and Emergency Department, Riccarton Avenue, phone 364 0640. This is free but it is a very busy department and you will get quicker service at the Bealey Ave Medical Centre.
- The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) provides personal injury cover for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand.
How to find a doctor
- For regular health and medical care you should enrol with a GP (General Practitioner or doctor). To find a GP in your area check the front of the.

- You are free to register with a GP of your choice. You need not change your GP if you move to a different area especially if you are happy with the service you receive. If you decide to change your GP, it is important to tell your new doctor about your previous enrolment, so your medical files can be transferred to your new GP.
- GPs can set their own fees and provide different services from other GPs.
- Children under 6 years can visit the doctor for free.
- People with a low income may qualify for a Community Services Card which will make doctor’s visits cheaper. Ask your doctor.
