Get around the city

Street Maps

  • A good map is essential to find your way around a new city whether walking or driving. Maps can be purchased from bookshops and petrol stations.

Buses

  • Buses operate throughout the city. For information about bus routes, timetables and fares you can go to the Bus Exchange (at the Crossing) on Colombo St in the central city, phone 366 8855

Taxis

  • Taxis can be ordered by phone. Yellow Pages icon Taxis or hailed at taxi stands.

Driving

Before driving around the city

  • You must have a licence. You can use your international driver's licence for one year.
  • You need to know the road rules. The rules are explained in a book called the Road Code. Libraries have copies of the Road Code or you can buy one at most booksellers, or contact the Land Transport Safety Authority (LTSA) or free phone 0800 822 422

  • Everyone in the car must wear a seat belt and babies must be in car seats.
  • It is a good idea to get car insurance Yellow Pages icon Insurance Companies and Offices

Getting a driver’s licence

  • You must get a New Zealand driver’s licence after one year, see what to do and where to go for a licence.
  • You will have to pass a theory test and possibly a practical driving test. You need to understand the Road Code to prepare for the test.
  • In New Zealand you must carry your driver’s licence or permit at all times when you are driving. If your overseas licence is not English, LTSA suggests you carry an official translation with you.
